In Sarah Cottier Gallery in Paddington, Australia, the artist Jamie North exhibits white marble and concrete pillars transforming them into life-carrying stones out of which greenery bursts. The name of the exhibition is “Terraforms”, a noun derived from the action process ‘terraforming’.
The meaning of terraforming pertains to adapting unsuitable environment making it convenient for nature life. Solid pillars are filled with native vegetation from Australia – trailing vines, orchids, and lithophytes contrasting the material included in the pillars – industrial waste coal-ash and white marble. By reusing materials, Jamie North creates new sustainable living environments overcoming usual obstacles.
